Training and Coaching in the Workplace

Training and coaching are development opportunities that go hand in hand. Each has its place. We needed to determine the needs of individuals or groups. In a nutshell, training is the transfer of information (knowledge) and can include practical elements to assess understanding and application.

What is Coaching? It’s a form of conversation to empower and support individuals by identifying their skills, motivation, and knowledge.

We can help you with Training Needs Analysis (TNA), also known as a training needs assessment. As part of TNA, coaching can occur before developing a training plan. This is to identify what skill gaps may exist in the teams. This approach can provide a more prescriptive approach to training rather than a blanket one size fits all approach. Many typically use coaching as a method to empower people and set goals. Having two-way conversations, understanding people, setting realistic goals, and supporting individuals are fantastic developmental tools, especially when done well.

Training might take place on a large scale, in small groups, in a classroom, or online. Rather than being band-aid-like, it should be relevant and frequent. Effective training occurs, and so does the transfer of information. Participants put their learnings into practice when given an opportunity.

Learners may accomplish it with role plays, knowledge checks, simulations, and practical sessions.

Training and Coaching Importance

Training and coaching are necessary for the workplace, and everyone should advocate opportunities to grow and develop. As we already know, training offers individuals the skills and knowledge they need to build their talents. Coaching helps instil these skills by assisting them in applying them effectively at work. When I first started working in the learning and development space nearly twenty years ago, it was viewed as a punishment. Something that people were forced to do when things weren’t going well, and in some cases, used to manage individuals out of business. Thankfully less of this occurs, and the perception of training and coaching in the workplace is positive.

Train when necessary and coach frequently.
